William “Bill” Thomas, II, Jr. ’92, ’94 chose to attend Shenandoah because of the quality programs in his chosen career field. He also liked the small class sizes, beautiful campus and professors.
“It’s a great university for those looking for a small liberal arts university that excels in the arts with music and theater as well as in science, especially the health sciences. SU also has an excellent business school and has a great location with a beautiful campus,” said Thomas.
Thomas’ fondest memories of Shenandoah were creating lifelong friendships with his classmates and professors. He enjoyed being Student Government Association president and playing on the then newly formed men’s lacrosse team.
Thomas is a physician who specializes in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Non-Surgical Sports Medicine. He serves communities in the Roanoke River Valley and surrounding areas of Southwestern Virginia, and is affiliated with LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. He is also the team physician for the Bluefield Blue Jays (a minor league baseball team of the Rookie Appalachian League) and assistant professor of Internal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine for Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The most rewarding part of Thomas’ career is making a positive change in his patients’ lives and having a positive influence on them.
His Shenandoah education opened the door to healthcare for him and fully prepared him for his career. He was also prepared for later in his life when he would go on to medical school.
Thomas’ advice to students is: “Get the core sciences down and do well in them but don’t forget to be well-rounded.”
